New Year cheer for Salford Ladies Reserves.
Burnley started the game at a blistering pace putting Salford’s defence under a lot of pressure. Salford held firm with some good defending by Dominique Marshal, Charlotte O’Connor, Jess Daly and Lou Wakefield.
Against the run of play Salford scored the first goal, Katie Winder in midfield played the ball out to Hannah Denholm who flicked it over to the Salford player just outside the penalty area most strikers would have blasted the ball but Anne Beagan coolly chipped the Burnley keeper, 1 – 0 Salford.
Both teams were now playing attacking football. Salford’s keeper Leanne Jones pulled off some terrific saves, with some hard work coming from Lyndsey Newman, Abbie Ordish, Rhea Knowles and Hannah Denholm, Salford began to dominate, and went in the leaders at half time, 1 - 0.
The second half started much the same as the first with Salford under pressure from a determined Burnley side. Salford scored their second goal which involved at least eight passes within the Salford team starting from the keeper Leanne Jones right through to Charlotte O’Connor who hit the ball low into the Burnley net, 2 - 0.
Salford made a few changes and brought on Chelsea Scholes, who immediately got into the action alongside Anne Beagan both coming close to scoring but were denied each time by the Burnley keeper.
Lyndsey Newman launched another through ball to Chelsea Scholes who charged at the Burnley defence taking on three players before slotting the ball into the back of the net, 3 – 0. Another change for Salford and Clare Daly was in on the action.
Burnley didn’t give up though and showed some good spirit, both with determination and lack of concentration from Salford, Burnley got their reward for their efforts and scored with minutes to go. Full-time 3 - 1.
