Salford loose out to battling Bradford.
Salford travelled to Bradford City on the third weekend of the season, looking to add a third victory to their excellent early season form.Manager Gareth Wynn stated before the game that Bradford would be a tough test for his side, and hoped his players were up to the challenge.
The early exchanges were fairly competitive with both sides eager to have a foot hold on the game. Salford started brightest though, creating a few half chances but mostly being reduced to long range shots which didn't trouble the Bradford goalkeeper.
Twenty minutes in and Salford won a free kick 25 yards from goal which was brilliantly converted by Lyndsey Newman 0-1. After that the game began to get heated with both teams competetive in the tackle, and Bradford's frustrations began to grow. A mistake in the Salford defensive third and Bradford equalised. A routine save for the Salford keeper Joanne Phillips was misjudged and the ball crept under her body and over the line for 1-1. Bradford began to control the game, but just before half-time Isha Mundell ran clear of the Bradford defence only to see her shot come back off the post. Salford had to settle for being level at the interval.
The second half kicked off much the same as the first with both sides showing the will to win and an eagerness to be victorious, with aggression in the tackle. Once again a defensive error led to a second Bradford goal. Salford were sloppy in possession and another routine save was parred only for the Bradford forward to score the rebound 2-1. Salford were up against it.
Within ten minutes Bradford had a third. A cross from the right was misjudged as the ball looped over the Salford keeper and into the top corner of the net 3-1. Salford had it all to do now! Salford tried in vein to crack the home teams rear guard but Bradford stayed resilient and strong until the end.
Bradford in the end deserved victory, but Salford were disappointing and much is to be done if they are to mount a serious challenge for the league title.
